discrimination due to literacy standardsDiscrimination due to literacy standards involves treating someone differently based on their educational standard, or their status of being literate or illiterate.
In other words, it is discrimination between an educated and an uneducated person. |
How does illiteracy lead to discrimination?
Many activists claim that it isn't 'illiteracy' that influences discrimination, rather it is simple a 'lack of education' that is responsible. However, illiteracy is the cause of certain kinds of discrimination in the following ways:
- Illiteracy means that a person is most likely to be uneducated. Lack of education makes a person ingorant, and hence, intolerant. It is this ignorance and intolerance that leads to many forms of discrimination like racial discrimination and religious discrimination.
- Education is an important element that is considered while classifying people in a society. This means that most people are discriminated based on their ability to read and write. This form of discrimination occurs involuntarily in every society.
- Education is also a factor that helps people form a better future for themselves. Educated people are more likely to find better jobs and attain a higher status in the society. However, uneducated people are most likely to end up with low-quality jobs that may only sufficiently fulfill their basic needs. This leads to separation of the rich and poor in a society, leading to class discrimination.
